Circular RNA (circRNA) are a category of covalently closed circRNA molecules that normally do not encode proteins. circRNA are involved in many physiological processes as well as the pathogenesis of diseases. A growing number of studies have reported that the incidence and development of cardiac fibrosis is closely associated with the regulation of circRNA. This review summarizes the current understanding of circRNA biogenesis and function, highlighting the recent updates regarding the involvement of circRNA in cardiac fibrosis, and their potential as novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets.
