Effect of combination of invigorating spleen recipes and enteral nutrition on intestinal flora in rats with ulcerative colitis

Objective To evaluate the effect of combination of invigorating spleen recipe and enteral nutrition (EN) on the intestinal flora in SD rat models with ulcerative colitis (UC). Methods Sixty SD rat models with UC were established by dextran sodium sulfate. After the UC model was established, all SD rats were randomly divided into the blank, model, EN, invigorating spleen and EN + invigorating spleen groups, 12 rats for each group. The changes in body weight and disease activity index (DAI) of the rats were recorded, and the length and histological changes of the colon were observed. Finally, the diversity and relative abundance of microbial bacteria in the intestine of rats were evaluated by the 16S rDNA sequencing method. Results Compared with the model group, the UC-related symptoms were significantly improved in the EN and EN + invigorating spleen groups. The degree of weight loss and DAI increase in the UC rats were significantly reduced, the length of colon and histological scores were remarkably improved, and the bacterial diversity was increased. The relative abundance of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteriaceae was elevated, whereas that of Enterobacteriaceae and Bacteroideceae was decreased (all P < 0.05 or 0.05/10). Compared with the EN alone group, the combined treatment of EN and invigorating spleen further mitigated the UC-related symptoms, increased the diversity of the flora, enhanced the relative abundance of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteriaceae, and reduced the relative abundance of Enterobacteriaceae and Bacteroideae (all P < 0.05/10). Conclusions The combined treatment of EN and invigorating spleen recipes can effectively improve the intestinal flora in UC rats.
