Acid sphingomyelinase (ASMase) not only mediates lysosomal metabolism, participates in the regulation of membrane structure and signal transduction, but also plays a key role in the conversion of sphingomyelin into ceramide. ASMase is encoded by the sphingomyelin phosphodiesterase 1 (SMPD1) gene. Recent studies have found that SMPD1 and ASMase are correlated with the onset and progression of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease. In this article, the research progress on the association between SMPD1, ASMase and Parkinson’s disease was reviewed.
