Research progress on the role of renal tubular epithelial cell-epithelial mesenchymal transition in diabetic nephropathy

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is an important microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus and the main cause of end-stage renal diseases. Recent studies have shown that renal tubular epithelial cell (TEC)-epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT) plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of DN. However, the role of EMT in renal fibrosis and whether it exists in the human body remain elusive. Here, research progresses on the molecular mechanism underlying the role of TEC-EMT in DN and the involvement of EMT in DN renal fibrosis were reviewed.
