The role of pericytes and Apelin in diabetic macular edema

  • Diabetic macular edema is the main cause of vision loss in patients with diabetic retinopathy. The mechanisms of polyol pathway, hexosamine pathway and glycation end products have been well known. Recent studies have shown that pericyte and Apelin also play an important role in the occurrence and development of diabetic macular edema. Therefore, the role of pericyte and Apelin in diabetic macular edema was reviewed to understand more possible mechanisms.
